Earthquake in the NE USA

Earthquake in the NE USA

Well, Nature can always surprise.

A magnitude 6 quake occurring in Virginia and quakes of this power happen once in a lifetime in this portion of the United States. This is the third earthquake related post that has been done and in less than two years! And now there is the matter of Hurricane Irene bearing down with a predicted swath ranging from the Outer Banks through New York City and onto Bangor Maine.

A magnitude 6 quake does not usually make for a lot of damage but I contacted the museums in the area nonetheless.  I should have contacted more, so my apologies, but I emailed the following:

Surprisingly, and after allowing four days to elapse, only one museum responded.

Thankfully, Mr. Louis J. Leto reports that all is well at the National Vigilance Park :) He wrote:

“Thank you for your note of concern regarding the National Cryptologic Museum and National Vigilance Park. I am happy to tell you no one was hurt and no exhibits or aircraft were damaged.”

It was kind of Mr. Leto to respond just as Mrs. Therese Angelo of the Air Force Museum of New Zealand did after the Christchurch New Zealand quake.

I would hazard a guess to say the silent three museums also experienced insignificant damage and suffered no injuries to their staff or family members.

We will of course try again after Irene has spent herself.

Errata

Mr. Leto was kind enough to send me an email to let me know that I had not spelled his name correctly and had misnamed the National Vigilance Park as a museum (it is part of the National Cryptologic Museum, however). As can be seen above, the errors have been emended. My thanks for helping to ensure the accuracy of the information in this post, Mr. Leto :)
