Grumman FF Fifi

The FF, it would be Grumman’s opening act for decades of service in providing excellent and hardy aircraft for the U.S. Navy. Leroy Grumman founding the company only two months after the 1929 Stock Market crash!

The general lines of the design — the narrow track landing gear and full bellied fuselage — would carry through the F2F, F3F and F4F Wildcat, with the Wildcat becoming a monoplane. Nicknamed Fifi the FF’s retractable gear and enclosed cockpit were significant advances for American aircraft of the time.
