The Grumman OV-1 Mohawk at FLL Exec one day circa 2001— photo by Joseph May

These images were taken circa 2001 using Kodachrome 64 slide film. They may be classified as retro but there is character in the grain-like texture of film and it was fun selecting certain films so that certain colors could be emphasized or recorded accurately. In this case reds and blues along with the green color on the fuselage as well as the wings.

The Grumman OV-1 Mohawk seen in these images was at the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE) the day I saw it. I dropped by to see what I could see, back in the days before airfields were fenced off. Before a time when people have become frightened with “stranger danger” by Homeland Security so that photographers in public places are approached and questioned as to why they are there and why they are taking photos.

The Mohawk has always appealed to me. Perhaps because my father flew them but also their stout and powerful appearance. It is quite maneuverable (even having speed brakes), carrying a crew of two sitting side-by-side with a canopy allowing them to see out and downwards, and has six hard points under the wings.

    Hi, Joe…
I always thought it looked like a big mosquito….. (bug, not airplane!)…threatening, in a humble sort of way!… always enjoyed watching it start up! Have sat in one…unreal visibility…similar in appearance and purpose…like the A10. Interesting color… and color!

It is big like in appearance — and like many earlier helicopters 🙂

      Happy New Year!
