The world is ever changing and the pace of many of those changes increases daily. Aviation and economies are intertwined to the extent that they are inseparable. Aviation is adapting to the changing global economy with new aircraft, newer computerized control system—and better way to build aircraft as well as engines.

A Circular Economy Handbook for Business and Supply Chains is a prescient perspective of the future. Often using Nature as metaphor the future is simply not having waste where a byproduct of a process is a raw material for another production line. Warehousing needs are further diminished from just-in-time delivery models to 3-D printing (3DP) technology—not to mention mass production strategies transitioning to a an orchestrated dance of production requiring minimal lead time as well as resource storage. This is where aviation excels—getting things where they need to be from one point to another at the appointed times. Think of the various subassembly manufacturing sites for modern aircraft construction which deliver their products to the final assembly point the day required for their turn in the final construction facility.

As Weetman’s book attests, the future is nearer than we may think. The description of the 3DP turbofan fuel nozzle that is five times stronger with five brazes/welds instead of the original 25. It is not a great leap to envision 3DP factories borne within freighter aircraft—taking the factory to where the manufacturing is required. Her writing style is smooth and concisely explains the material with élan. The author addresses more than several business niches with equal skill and insight.

Weetman’s book is filled to the brim with ideas, examples, studies, citations and figures. This is the world we will soon be living in with its new paradigms, global economy and created niches to exploit—one which aviation will be an imperative dimension.
