The Red Arrows have flown with the Vulcan bomber for the final time in a show of great British aviation icons. Jets from the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team performed a flypast with the mighty Cold War aircraft at the Southport Air Show this afternoon (Saturday, September 19th, 2015). Thousands of people cheered and waved as the Red Arrows’ nine distinctive British-built Hawk aircraft made a V-shape in front of the Vulcan.

Years ago, some RC modelers in the UK built a very large Vulcan model. It was not too long after real axial flow turbine engines for RC came on the market. The guy in charge of the engines built a system of fuel tanks and lines to the engines that was so complicated, even he had trouble keeping everything in working order. There were photos in the magazine of the plane with the hatches off. Looked like something Rube Goldberg would have designed, but with more parts than RG would have used. I never heard what became of the model, but it was great while it lasted.

In the last five photographs – those showing XH558 with the Red Arrows – the Vulcan is being flown by Wing Commander Bill Ramsey, RAF (Ret’d). As well as being a good friend, Bill is the Director of Operations, The People’s Mosquito Ltd, the UK organisation dedicated to restoration to flight status of a de Havilland Mosquito.

FWIW, the Vulcan was in “Thunderball” (which had, IMHO, the best opening theme of the whole series).
