    Old DC-3 and similar vintage airplanes are still in regular use in Alaska. Often brutal conditions, but the old birds keep chugging away. Built long before their pilots were born, despite the fact some pilots are in their 70s.

    They did not have computers and advanced design capability back when they were rolling off Douglas’s assembly line. They were overbuilt. REALLY overbuilt.

    Interesting factoid. James McDonnell got his start as a subcontractor building engine cowlings for DC-3 and other early Douglas airplanes.
