ACCEL—Rolls-Royce’s speed record seeker electric aircraft project

6 January 2019

This article from the Engineer relates the Rolls-Royce ACCEL (Accelerating the Electrification of Flight) project which is to fly the fastest electric aircraft in the world. The goals are a range of 200 miles and a top speed much greater than the 2017 record set by Siemens of 210 mph.

The propeller is to be powered by YASA three motors yielding 500+ horsepower. Poetically, Rolls-Royce ultimately could beat the Rolls-Royce powered Supermarine S.6B’s historic speed run of 343 mph just before WW II.

Fingers crossed for ACCEL’s attempt which is planned for 2020.
