Aviation Museums within the USA (grouped by state)
These listings are grouped by states and in alphabetical order—a two letter post office abbreviation is used for the state in the address. There are quite a few military bases that have excellent aviation displays and, since they require either a military ID or an escort, so I have not included these.
Last updated May 2021: the USA is a large country with much in the way of aviation history—200+ museums with three newly opened museums this year—yet the states of West Virginia and Mississippi each lack even a single dedicated aviation museum, though each has a museum in part dedicated to aviation.
Mr. Patrick Carry maintains the museum list at Warbird Alley and shared the many updates he has diligently found verifying links several times per year.
Museums that are on ships or where ships are present are listed in this color (5 aircraft carriers and 2 battleships).

Isaac,
Thanks — this is a significant contribution 🙂 I’ll edit the lists within a few days so that these are included and update my perosnal map, as well.
Joe
“yet the states of West Virginia and Mississippi each lack even a single aviation museum”
Check out the John C. Stennis space center in Mississippi. There’s rockets, rocket engines, a shuttle mock-up, and a Learjet on display, among other things.
Cool. I’ll amend the list in a few days 🙂
The new web URL for Glenn L Martin Maryland Aviation Museum is http://www.mdairmuseum.org/
Thanks — this is a great help. I’ll edit the entry this weekend. Joe
Thanks for this great list !
My husband and I plan to use your list in our plans for travel from Massachusetts to Oshkosh, WI in July where it’s fun to not only see the museum, but the great annual event, AirVenture (www.AirVenture.org), where thousands of aircraft fly in. Check out the Warbirds section (especially the tribute to WWII with B-29, Lancaster, and more), antique planes, etc.
So we’ll use you list to stop at additional museums on the way to & from Oshkosh.
.
I do see one typo in your list — Massachusetts is misspelled for the Air and Space Museum which we’re also looking forward to visiting once it’s finished. (and we’ve joined to support it’s creation).
.
btw — The National Museum of the US Air Force has a ‘Behind the Scenes Tour’ — http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/visit/tours.asp (< schedule at this link) — My husband and I have been to this wonderful museum years ago, but didn't know about this tour until this year – we've already booked the limited attendance Behind the Scenes Tour.
So glad this list was a help for you 🙂 So many museums and so little time!
Thanks for pointing out the typo and I agree that I should amend the National USAF Museum listing so indicate the behind the scenes tours. I went on the one for the restoration hangar and enjoyed the insights there immensely. Just down the way, a few miles, from the museum is the Haynes Prairie site where the Wright Brothers did much of their test flying. It is beautiful as well as bucolic there. Type the name into the search window to get the information.
Joe,
Great site!
Please consider and add our museum (A flying and educational museum) in Concord, CA
Thanks Joe!
Of course! I’ll edit the page on the weekend and gladly 🙂
Joe,

Which one is that, please?
Joe, the URL updates for the Valiant Air Command Museum in Florida, the Massey Air Museum in Maryland and the US Army Aviation Museum in Alabama did not appear on the list
I’m updating two lists actually. I thought I had a system but I guess not a good one. I can get to it a bit later tonight. Thanks 🙂
This is funny 😉
I made those changes but you didn’t see them. I think you are looking at the blog through the Seattle PI web site perhaps? Instead of the home web site on WordPress?
The way it works for me is that when I edit (for which I use the WordPress site) it takes 12 hours or so to roll through to the Seattle PI site.
That’s my theory, it may be something else but I checked and the edits have been made on both of my USA lists.
No harm, no foul 🙂
Joe, In Calif the Edwards AFB Air Park is now called the Air Force Flight Test Center Museum http://afftcmuseum.org
Thanks Patrick. I updated the three of them just now.
Joe, In Nebraska the Strategic Air & Space Museum is now called the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum They have the same website
Joe, In Maryland the Massey Aerodrome Living History Museum is just the Massey Air Museum http://www.masseyaero.org

Joe, In Alabama, the URL for the US Army Aviation Museum is http://www.armyaviationmuseum.org
Joe, in Alabama the URL for the US Space & Rocket Center is http://www.rocketcenter.org
Joe, in Alabama the URL for the US Space & Rocket Center is http://www.rocketcenter.org
oops. try .com instead of .org
I got them in now 🙂
Along with the Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust sites we found, the list has become more comprehensive and up-to-date–thanks for your lion’s share of the work re-verifying the urls. Quite a few name changes, too.
Joe, here on my end the URL’s for the Valiant Air Command Museum in Fl and the US Army Aviation Museum in Al were not updated on the list where the museums are listed by state. However they did get updated on the list where the museums are listed alphabetically. On the other hand the URL for the Massey Air Museum in Maryland was not updated on either list. When you click onto the link it says 404:page not found
Okay, I’ve managed to confuse myself. Not the first time! I’ll get it all fixed and thanks for the additional three 🙂
Joe, In Arizona at the Planes of Fame Museum, in the URL delete everything after the .org
Joe, in Arkansas at the Aviation Cadet Museum the current link says 404: page not found. The correct URL is http://www.aviationcadet.org
Joe, In Calif at the Joe Davies Heritage Airpark the current URL is http://www.cityofpalmdale.org/airpark
Thanks, I made these changes as well as the corrections. I figures out that I was in effect committing cut-and-paste errors of some sort. I changed the process so its good now. Thanks 🙂
Looking good now Joe! Together we are making progress!!
You are more than kind–especially since you are doing most of the work. I’ll have to buy you a beer sometime.

Joe, In Florida the Kissimmee Air Museum is now called Warbird Adventures/Kissimmee Air Museum http://www.warbirdadventures.com/air_museum

Changed it.
Joe, here is a new listing for you in N.C. Its the Western N.C. Air Museum in Hendersonville NC. http://www.westernnorthcarolinaairmuseum.com
Great. Love adding new ones 🙂
Joe, in Or. the Evergreen Air & Space Museum now has anew URL http://www.evergreenmuseum.org
Changed it. I see they dropped the reference to the Spruce Goose in the URL but they still have it. What a wonderful aircraft to see and you can go into the cockpit which is really a cabin a la the Dornier Do X. Roomy enough to house a single row radial aircraft engine in an out of the way corner! Unusual in that a recip powered aircraft had an APU.
I would like to see that plane one day
Joe, In Iowa for the URL at the Iowa Aviation Museum, delete everything after “.com” it should then be a-ok
Done. It looks like they got one of the earliest url addresses.

Another much simpler url.
Joe, In Oregon the Pendleton Air Museum closed a few years ago

Shame 😦

Joe, In Texas at the No 1 British Training Flying Museum, in the URL drop everything after the “.org” It should then be a-ok
Will do 🙂
Joe, In Texas I cant find any info showing that a West Texas Air Museum exists.
I read a link to an empty Facebook page. It never had a url as far as I know. I also don’t see a clue of it on Google Earth. There are photos on-line of it though.
I looked into it more. Google Earth satellite view show much that was removed when compared to the street view coverage (which is older). There was a Jet Provost as a sort of gate guard and a roof covered structure housing aircraft but all are gone now, including the structure, leveled. I’m marking the listings as closed.
Joe, In Utah the URL for the Hill Aerospace Museum is http://www.hill.af.mil/Home/Hill-Aerospace-Museum
Thanks…updated now.
Joe, In Virginia the URL for the Air Power Park is http://www.visithampton.com/play/listing/air-power-park. There isnt a whole lot on this site. Wikipedia has a better listing if you care to use it instead. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Power_Park
Joe, what does that mean when it says “your comment is awaiting moderation”?
I have no idea. I don’t have things set up to be approved but let me check.
This one required my approval for some reason. Just saw it now.
Thanks Pat, I updated to include both urls.
Joe, Also in Virginia the URL for the NASM/Udvar Hazy is https://airandspace.si.edu/udvar-hazy-center
Even they are changing their url 😉

Hi Pat,
That url is the hub for both NASM facilities. The url for the NASM on the Mall is https://airandspace.si.edu/node/73198 so I revised both web site urls.

Added it–glad to see another new museum–put it in as Poplar Grove Vintage Wings & Wheels Museum.
2 more in Illinois for you Joe. 1. Illinois Aviation Museum in Bolingbrook http://www.illinoisaviationmuseum.org and 2. World Aerospace Museum in Quincy http://www.jet-warbirds.com
Great to see an additional two 🙂
The World Aerospace Museum is a grand title for the small business it appears to be of importing Soviet aircraft–interesting to see the operations I’d think. Odd they give no address–only that they are located in Adams County. I placed it in the listings though.
Joe, in Calif here is another new listing. Its the Hillier Air Museum in Modesto. http://www.hillierairmuseum.com Not to be confused w/ the Hiller Air Musem

Joe, in Florida I can not find anything for the Historical Flight Foundation. The mentioned DC-7 has been parked at the Carolines Aviation Museum for the past 3 years with no immediate plans to fly it.
Yes, I see the url goes to a complete other venture. The DC-7 blew a jug on take off leaving the Carolinas Aviation Museum so it remains there. The guys on the DC-7 were pretty fired up and I thought they’d have fixed that by now. The main driving force is the guy who runs a small DC-3 based airline running freight between Opa-locka FL and the Caribbean. It’s the DC-3 you see taking off in the Burn Notice intro. I edited the listing and removed the url.
I would love to see this DC-7 one day
It is gorgeous 🙂 The rear is a circular couch for lounging in flight–ash trays included–another era 🙂

Odd that the web site for the Mid America Flight Museum offers only a small single clue to their location, that of the town–not a street address or airport. This is how most people these days find a place–by using a GPS app/device (mine is an app on my phone) and an address.

Joe, in Calif the Wings and Rotors Air Museum is only on Facebook now. http://www.facebook.com/wingsandrotorsairmuseum

Joe, This is a sad one. In Washington the Flying Heritage & Combat Armour Museum is closed indefinately! There is a real good chance they will never reopen. Others will be closing as well
Indeed, sad.
First, thank you for the information, and your perception. I could enjoy this blog and most importantly this content.
At this time, I feel I waste far too enough time on-line, reading junk, effectively.
This was a refreshing change from what I’ve known. Nonetheless, I believe
perusing other people’s thoughts is a valuable investment of at minimum
a few of my weekly measure of amount of time in my timetable.
It’s almost like hunting throughout the chaff to obtain the
gold. Or alternatively, whatever illustration performs best for you.
Still, sitting in front of the laptop is
most likely as harmful to you as smoking and deep-fried potato chips. http://njmassage.info/Massage-Learning-Center/Massage-School/

Joe, here is another one of those strange ones. In Oregon the link you have for the Oregon Military Museum does not work. But, when you do a Google search, it works. https perhaps??
Yes, it does not make sense. Maybe a special character command instead of a letter on the keyboard input? I passed the url from the website–although it looks the same it works when the older one dod not. Good catch!

Not good news at all. So many are closing up shop. Many more to come I’m sure https://www.10news.com/local-news/san-diego-news-/mcas-miramar-flying-leatherneck-museum-to-close-permanetly
Ooooops I goofed try https://www.10news.com/local-news/san-diego-news/mcas-miramar-flying-leatherneck-museum-to-close-permanetly
Well I’m not sure just y this link does not work.
That’s okay…the gist is obvious. I know COVID protocols must be in play but most museums are pretty spacious so I’d expect them to be safe enough to visit. Going to the National Naval Aviation Museum is just about impossible without ID from the DoD…likely due to the Saudi shooter over a year ago…who had a DoD ID.
In this case if the link worked, it says the museum is getting too expensive to operate. I feel there will be many more museums closing this year
Hope this works. https://www.10news.com/local-news/san-diego-news/mcas-miramar-flying-leatherneck-museum-to-close-permanently
Here is a new listing in Georgia. Its the Commemorative Air Force Airbase Georgia http://www.airbasegeorgia.org

Joe, The Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum in Calif is now closed. Sad for sure
Sad a museum closed but it was not run well and the aircraft were left to mounded. Hopefully they have better homes in the future. Sad they let it go.
Unfortunately several planes will be scrapped
Let’s hope not…I’ll ask around to see if anyone knows something about relocating those aircraft.
Joe, More bad news for aviation museums. In Hawaii the Naval Air Museum Barbers Point is closed. They were evicted from the base. So many museums closing
