Aviation Museums within the USA (alphabetical order)

NOTE: ever since WordPress had to halt using JAVA I cannot update this listing.

These listings are in alphabetical order but if you want to search by state or by city then I suggest that you use a word search (CTRL-F) will bring up the proper window—a two letter post office abbreviation is used for the state in the address. There are quite a few military bases that have vxcellent aviation displays but require either a military ID or an escort to see them, so these have not been addressed in this particular list.

Last updated May 2021: the USA is a large country with much in the way of aviation history—200+ museums with three newly opened museums this year. Yet, the states of  West Virginia and Mississippi each lack even a single dedicated aviation museum, though each has a museum in part dedicated to aviation.

Mr. Patrick Carry maintains the museum list at Warbird Alley and shared the many updates he has diligently found verifying links several times per year.

Museums that are on ships or where ships are present are listed in this color (5 aircraft carriers and 2 battleships).

This is a very comprehensive list, thanks for putting it together – you’ve left off the Owls Head Transportation Musem.

Thanks so much Laurie and it’ll be great to add your museum to the list 🙂

      Consider it done.

Great list! May I add one more to it – Wendover air base in Utah. Perhaps one of the last “complete” Waorld War II air fields with hangars, barracks and administration buildings left. You can even visit the loading pits that the 509th Composite Group used to train for the atomic bomb missions.

      Hi Tom,

Thanks. I knew about tbe base and I have it on my list of places to visit but was totally unaware of the museum there or its plans. I’ll add it to this list when I get back home from the office — and thanks again, it will be good to see what you all have done with the place.

      Joe

      PS Done! 🙂

      Hello again,

I’ve completed the additions you mentioned and we are very grateful to you for them 🙂 We did have MAPS in there but not as the acronym — we added it however so that it stands out by that name, as well. We didn’t add Grimes Flying Lab Foundation since it isn’t a museum proper but we should write about it in a future post since they provide such a great service. Thanks again, Joe

Consider a reference to “EAA AirVenture Museum” instead of or in addition to just “AirVenture Museum” since it is how they refer to themselves. [ Also home of the “EAA AirVenture fly-in” ]

Great list – thanks! Also, you can add the Spirit of Flight Center in Erie, CO (www.spiritofflight.com). They have a Women in Aviation section, Apollo Astronaut Scott Carpenter memorabilia, and supposedly an ME-109 (off-site for renovation at present). Not fancy, but a lot of history and very knowledgeable guides.

Thank you for taking the time to put together this list — it will be very helpful in making the most of future trips. One thing to note: You have listed Chanute Air Museum twice — once under “Chanute” and once under “Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum.” You may also wish to include the Hanger One Museum at 2040 Lehigh Ave, Glenview, IL 60026. It’s very small, but it does a nice job of telling the story of the former Naval Air Station Glenview. It could use some support from local and visiting aviation fans. Jonathan

Thanks for the compliment and noting the duplication as well as the tip on the museum to place onto the lists. The duplication has been remedied and the Glenview Hangar One Museum happily added–there is a special place in our hearts for the small museums, so thanks again 🙂
